I did some shopping yesterday with Christmas songs in the background…it’s cold, but no snow…sent off a package this morning…and here’s a box at my doorstep. Wow…oh yeah, no turkey and pumpkin pie yet…what could it be?
The Winter Pantry Box!!! Can you believe it? Organic local vegetables, fruits, eggs, a jar of goodness, and baked goods, all made from local and organic ingredients. I wrote an interview for a CSA farm in Ohio (The Wayward Seed Farm) for the Carrots book for Learn Great Foods, soon to be available. (it’s at the printer as I write!) I was so jealous of their offerings. Then I got an e-mail asking if I would like to be a member of the Winter Pantry. Wow!!! Here it is, delivered to my door! Check it out….
Wholewheat Sourdough bread made from 200 year old starter. Just tangy enough and a hearty chew. Perfect with a sharp cheddar. Whole wheat Zucchini Pepita Muffins that are sweet and have lots of texture. A perfect breakfast or snack.
I couldn’t resist….the first to go..a muffin…gone in an instant!
And then the Caramelized Onion Tart with Quinoa Crust. Always a favorite, the crust was fantastically crunchy and flavorful! I’ve got to try that…adding quinoa to a pastry dough.
The only problem…the tart is much too small. But…wait…they have given us the recipe in the weekly newsletter. Now I can make another one for our Thanksgiving appetizer. And I will…in fact for me, that could be the whole meal!
And what to do with the rest of the goodies? The organic eggs are always welcome and we already ate a few of the Baby Red potatoes for supper, simply steamed, with chicken and gravy. Vegetable Pasta Sauce will make a quick meal Saturday night after a long day at the shop. The onions are destined for that tart and just about everything else. I put onions in everything! The Fireside Apples??? I’ve been wanting to make Aebleskiver, so sauteed in butter, they will be the perfect accompaniment. What’s Aebleskiver? Next blog…
