My grand daughter had a dinosaur birthday party. How cool is that? Lots of lizards and turtles and snakes made their way to the back yard to visit the kids so they could learn a little about our neighbors of the creepy crawly sort. Jurassic Parties did a great job. All the kids loved it. Grandma hung out in the kitchen with a quick peek once in a while. I had to guard the food, after all.
I’ve escaped the frigid Midwest for sunny and warm Southern California to visit with my fellow blogger, Priscilla, and the rest of my family. It’s October and a crazy time in Galena, Illinois. Tourists are flocking to town for the beautiful fall colors and a chance to start their Christmas shopping. Yes, it’s about time to start thinking about it…sorry to bring that up!
After a long weekend, I needed a quick and tasty supper.
Today the CSA (community supported agriculture) box came. The first of the season. It felt so good walking to the pick-up spot, only about half a block. (I’m pretty lucky in that regard) I took my reusable shopping bag with me to haul home my stash. Wow…as usual, it’s amazing! Pristine organic vegetables, picked yesterday, washed to perfection.Two Onion Farms is our source. Two wonderful and detail oriented farmers, Chris and Juli, grow the best I’ve ever seen. Spring is the best time for salads.
At the market today the asparagus looked fabulous. It pops up over night, seemingly. Many people around here go on asparagus hunts, much like the morel search. It survives in ditches and fence lines. The thing is, you have to know where to look. The tiny spears creep up in the midst of weeds and grasses and you have to look close, even when you know where it is. When left to grow it produces tall feathery stalks and eventually in the fall, red berries. Memory of the location is key.
