It starts out so innocently. A few seeds in a sunny spot. After the weather warms up and the sun kicks into gear those little seeds have sprouted into cute little plants. In a couple weeks they grow and grow. Big bushes now overtake the too small space I gave them. So, it’s time to choose…who will live and who will succumb to the compost pile? I leave 4 plants to supply my needs. I read a great tip to supply water for these thirsty plants. When planting the seeds you plant a gallon plastic nursery pot in the center of the circle of plants. In the hot and dry times of the summer you fill the pot with water. The drainage holes will slowly seep water into the roots of the plants. It takes a lot of water to get those big juicy vegetables! I planted the pot, but the summer rains never seems to stop, so it was not at all useful this year. As everyone knows, once they start growing, they don’t stop! Leave a beautifully normal looking zucchini unpicked for even a day, and they turn into giant green monsters before your eyes. Yes, they are sometimes hard to spot under all that foliage, but you must hunt them down! What to do??? Eat lots of zucchini, make bread for the freezer, make pickles, eat more zucchini….and only plant 3 seeds next year!
