Culture of your community
Urban or rural? Rural
Diversity? Mainly white, but is a bigger african american community and smaller mexican, middle eastern, greek, vietnamese, and laotian communities.
Art events? there are a few art events, it is easier to go to Davenport, but there is a lumberjack festival coming up although I go with my son to the Celtic festival in Davenport.
Food Festivals? The women’s club has a tea party and the community college has a day of ethnic food sharing.
If you have children at home or care for children: I have two children girl 16 and son 12.
What do you feed your babies and young children? Mainly pastas and meats, but I do get them to try different foods, my son loves Bizarre Foods.
Do you make your own baby food or buy it ? I did both with the children.
What is your favorite recipe? This is a hard one, but if I had to choose it would be coooked eggplant, with fresth tomato and basil all out of my garden with a hint of salt.
Did you learn ethnic recipes from your Mother? Father? Grandparents? Community? I learned a littte from everyone I encountered who wanted to share with me. I have a ukranian friend who taught me how to make pickle soup and it is a favorite in my household and at church potlucks.
What foods do you eat on holidays? I like to change it up by having soups, but at the big family things we usually have turkey and duck, or ham.
Do you grow any of your own food? Oh yes, and I try to do a new veggie to grow every year, last year it was okra, which turned out awesome, this year is salsify, but I am unsure as to how to cook it.
Where do you buy food? Hyvee, Fareway, and veggie markets.
What are your concerns about food? Americans are stagnant in food. I like to try different things and sometimes it is hard to find new cuisine. I have learned to love curry and am ecstatic about suchi, but there are so many foods out there I would love to get my mouth on. I am worried about how much crap the kids get in school for their lunches sometimes it seems as if all they get are carbs. Not enough veggies at all and I see this in nursing homes too. I just dont understand how these organizations can approve having so much processed food.
Is organic important? yes, but not always essential.
Is locally grown or produced food available?
yes, very much so, it is Iowa.
